Our Constitution

ARTICLE I - NAME AND PURPOSE

Section 1: The name of this organization shall be the “League of Milwaukee Artists.” It is an independent organization: it is
non-profit; it does not have any political or religious purpose.

Section 2: The purpose of this organization shall be to bring together sincere creative artists for the mutual advancement of its members and its work. Our aims are to promote the interest, appreciation, and understanding of art in southeastern Wisconsin and to foster a desire for improvement among our members by working and exhibiting together.


ARTICLE II - MEMBERSHIP

Section 1: The Professional membership of this organization shall be limited to 250. and shall be open to all qualified creative artists who work in one or more of the following mediums: Visual forms included are, but not limited to, painting, drawing, pen & ink, sculpture, mixed media, collage, decollage, assemblage, artistic calligraphy, digitally enhanced images created through photography and or digital photography printed and published in single edition, conceptual art, and original print/print making in single edition. Specific consideration may be given to artists working in sculpture or ceramic design as long as their art is unique and not craft based in nature and application.

The League shall permit additional Non-artist Associate Members who are spouses or partners of Professional Members with an annual membership fee of $25. They shall be accorded the same rights as full Professional Members except voting and exhibition privileges.

The League shall permit Student Memberships at a discounted annual fee of $5 with a minimum age of 18 and attending an institution as a student seeking a degree. Upon graduation, any Student Member may join the League as a full Professional Member with an additional jury requirement. They shall be accorded the same rights as full Professional Members except voting and exhibition privileges.

The League shall permit up to 20 Affiliate Members who are vendors, galleries or other associated entities who provide resources to Professional Members with an annual membership fee of $25. They shall be accorded the same rights as Professional Members except voting and exhibition privileges. An artist who is not juried into the League through the established jury process may also join as an Affiliate Member.

The League shall permit juried Art Faculty Memberships for high school and college-level art faculty at annual membership fee of $25 who will be accorded the same rights as Professional Members and included in the established membership limit.

​Section 2: There shall be no distinction made between professional and non-professional artists, or art students; nor any prejudice because of race, color, or creed.

Section3:  Members may be expelled for conduct considered harmful to this organization or for conduct contrary to this constitution. This expulsion must be passed by two-thirds of the members present at a regularly scheduled meeting and must be governed by Robert’s Rules of Order.

​Section 4: No member shall at any time use this organization for political or religious purposes.

Section 5: Age limit for all members shall be 18 years or older.


ARTICLE III - FEES

Section 1: The annual dues for membership shall be $45.00 per year; payable by December 31st. Payment after December 31st will be considered a late payment and will incur a late fee as determined by the Board.

Section 2: Annual dues are collectable and must be paid by December 31st. Members not paying dues by January 31st will be eliminated from the membership roster and the website roster. Dues not paid by the end of March will be cause for the member to be dropped from the League. In special cases, arrangements may be made with the President to be passed by the Board.

Section 3: Membership cards will be issued only upon the receipt of the annual dues.

​Section 4: The nine elected Officers are exempt from paying dues during their term of office. If a Board position is shared by two members, each member holding a half position will pay one half of the annual dues.


ARTICLE IV - OFFICERS

Section 1:  The Officers of this organization shall be: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Exhibit
Chairman, Membership Chairman, Publicity Chairman, Newsletter Designer and Newsletter Editor.

Section 2: These Officers shall be elected at a meeting, preferably in November, and shall hold their offices for th term of two years or until their successors are elected. They shall take office in January. Section 3: The Board of Directors, or a Committee appointed by the President, shall nominate one or more candidates for each office at a general meeting in November. Additional nominations from the floor may be made at this time. Consent of nominees to serve, if elected, must be obtained. ​Section 4: A vacancy occurring in any of the officer positions shall be filled by a Board of Directors appointment. Members filling vacancies shall hold office until the next general election. ​


ARTICLE V - BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Section 1: The Board of Directors shall consist of: the President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Exhibit
Chairman, Membership Chairman, Publicity Chairman, Newsletter Designer and Newsletter Editor.

Section 2: Retiring Officers may be called on to form an advisory committee to the Board of Directors. ​


ARTICLE VI - COMMITTEES

Section 1: Committees or Chairmen as may be deemed necessary to carry on the work of the League may be authorized and appointed by the Board of Directors, such as Sunshine and Hospitality.


ARTICLE VII - AMENDMENTS 

This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members present at a regular meeting, provided notice has been given one month prior to the meeting at which action on same is to be taken.
